Kingdom Character: PATIENCE (Week 5)

Preacher: Daniel Erasmus

Worship:
Play “The Mighty Name of Jesus” by Belonging Co.
As the song plays, reflect on this:
Where do you need Jesus to bring peace and strength in the waiting?
Let it be a moment to remember that even when we feel stretched or tired, His name is strong enough to hold us.

Check-in:
Let’s keep it light to start:
What’s one moment recently that tested your patience?
(Takealot delivery, school parking lot, standing in Clicks, load shedding, elevator button mashing…)

Have a laugh – we’ve all been there.

Synopsis of message:
Patience isn’t just about keeping calm in a queue. The Bible’s word for patience – makrothymia – points to something deeper: endurance, longsuffering, perseverance.

We explored how patience is not passive. It’s a powerful fruit of the Spirit that:

  1. Helps us wait for God’s timing
  2. Strengthens us to endure in hard seasons
  3. Shapes how we forgive others

Like David, we learn to trust even in long trials, slow healing, and unfulfilled promises. Patience matures us. And the more we fix our eyes on Jesus, the more we grow.

Scripture Focus:

  • Galatians 5:22 – 23
  • James 1:2 – 4
  • Hebrews 10:36 – 37
  • Psalm 130:5 – 6
  • Colossians 3:13
  • Hebrews 12:1 – 2

Discussion Questions:

  1. Waiting is not doing nothing
    • What makes waiting the hardest for you personally?
    • Has there been a time where you saw the value of waiting for God’s timing?
  2. Enduring through the hard seasons
    • Is there a trial or long stretch you’re walking through now?
    • What helps you stay connected to God when nothing seems to change?
  3. Patience in forgiveness
    • Read Colossians 3:13. Paul says, “Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you…”
What makes forgiveness hard to give – especially when you feel justified in your frustration?
    • Jesus has been patient and forgiving with us.
What would it look like to offer that same kind of grace to someone this week?

Prayer Moment:
Encourage everyone to open their hands as a posture of surrender. Then pray together:
“God, grow patience in us. Not just to get through the small stuff, but to endure, forgive, and trust You in every season. We lay down control, and we ask for Your strength. Teach us to wait well, and love well, just like You do.”

Next Step:
Write out this verse and keep it visible this week:
“I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in His word I put my hope.” – Psalm 130:5
Each day, pray this simple prayer: “Jesus, I trust Your timing. Help me wait with faith and not frustration.”
