The Weight of Words
Preacher: Daniel Erasmus
Worship:
Start by listening to “Run to the Father” by Cody Carnes. As the song plays, reflect on how God welcomes us with love, no matter our story.
What does it mean to you that God is a Father you can run to?
Check-in:
This past Sunday was Father’s Day, and the message reminded us that our words carry weight.
What stood out to you personally from the message?
Synopsis of message:
Ps Daniel reminded us that words have the power to shape identity and bring healing. God the Father spoke three kinds of words over Jesus that we’re called to speak too:
- Acceptance – “This is My Son.”
- Affection – “Whom I love.”
- Affirmation – “With Him I am well pleased.”
We all carry influence, not just fathers. And for many, there’s a need for healing from painful words or absence. God is a Father who heals and restores—and we can carry His heart to others.
Scripture:
- Proverbs 18:21
- Ephesians 4:29
- Matthew 3:16–17
- Psalm 68:5–6
Discussion Questions:
- Words Shape Identity
- Think of a time someone spoke life over you. What did that do for you?
- Who in your world needs to hear words of acceptance or encouragement right now?
- From Pain to Purpose
- Did any part of the message around word wounds or father wounds connect with your story?
- How have you seen God bring healing or use others to restore what was missing?
- Living It Out
- Which of the three kinds of words (acceptance, affection, affirmation) do you find easiest or hardest to give?
- What’s one way you can intentionally speak life this week—in your home, at work, or to a friend?
Prayer Moment:
Take time to pray over each other. You might want to ask: Is there an area where you need healing from past words? Or a relationship where you want to speak differently? Let the group pray encouragement and blessing.
Next Step:
Ask God to show you one person this week to speak life over. It could be a child, spouse, team member, or friend.
