Upgrading Sunnyside Park
The City of Cape Town and Edge Church are pleased to announce that the park will be open to the public on Friday, 31 January. Thank you for your understanding and support while we have endeavoured to give the grass and plants the best opportunity to get established through ongoing watering and maintenance during the warm summer months. We are looking forward to welcoming the community onto a brighter, welcoming and more connected neighbourhood space.

Following a successful proposal submitted to the City of Cape Town, Edge Church is pleased to be partnering with the City to upgrade Sunnyside Park—ensuring it remains a cherished space for all who live nearby.

This upgrade will include:
- 30 additional trees
- Laterite pathways
- New play equipment: including swings, a wooden jungle gym, rocking horses and see-saw
- Synthetic grass and safer rubberised surfacing under playground equipment
- Benches and picnic tables
- Enhancements to the dog park
- Landscaped berms with shrubs
- Improved access for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles
Fewer parking headaches!
Thanks to a new public parking area, vehicles will soon be removed from some of the neighbouring streets during church, school and scout hall meetings. This will mean safer parking for those using the park and dog park too.
Edge Church’s Parking Journey:
Our church, built in 1983 when most members lived nearby, has grown significantly. Times have changed, and so has transportation, leading to parking challenges. Although the church’s parking originally met planning requirements, it no longer meets the needs of our congregation today.
For this reason, the leadership team at Edge Church has been actively seeking ways to reduce parking impacts and any frustrations this may cause for our neighbours. We have been committed to finding solutions that benefit everyone in the area.
Currently, we have several measures in place during Sunday services, including 8–10 traffic marshals, 150 cones to mark no-parking areas, a temporary road closure certificate, double and triple parking on-site, spreading attendees across two services, and encouraging carpooling and walking wherever possible.
Despite these efforts, creating additional off-street parking with dedicated access will significantly ease the situation for the community.
Following discussions with the City, and the successful submission of proposals, we are delighted to be able to invest in revitalizing this much-loved part of our neighbourhood.
It is envisaged that the upgrade will take approximately 6 weeks, starting on 21 October 2024.
Here’s to a safer, brighter and more connected neighbourhood space.
