Ready. Set. COOK.

For Edge Church, Holiday Club has always been a time filled with excitement, anticipation and connection. I say connection because for Holiday Club to run smoothly, or to run at all, many hands are needed in many different areas. In total, there were 530 volunteers that signed up for Holiday Club this year. But there were many volunteers that we didn’t see running up and down with kids during the week, including those committed to cooking a meal to feed the hundreds of hungry leaders and crew. This year, Kevin Boyes’s lifegroup took to serving the next generation in full MasterChef style.

Thanks to the suggestion and help from Hennie Grobbelaar, the group got together on the evening of the 6th of July and decided to have a cook-off. Upon arrival at the test kitchen they were to be cooking in, the group received their aprons and ingredients. They were taught a few knife skills before beginning, big knives equal big responsibility as we all know, as well as some other top tips. Finally the recipes were handed out, and in teams of two, the race began. After two hours, 30 servings of Chicken à la King and rice had been made and packaged, ready to be handed over to Summer Greens Holiday Club.

According to Kevin, the group has cooked a meal every year since the inception of Summer Greens Holiday Club, but never before while having so much fun, “We have always enjoyed getting involved in this way and it has never seemed like a chore in any way but rather an act of love and service.” Not only was it fun, but it built a stronger bond within the lifegroup.

In 1 John 3:16 it says, “We know what real love is because Jesus gave up his life for us. So we also ought to give up our lives for our brothers and sisters.”

We have been called to serve, to serve God by serving one another. Holiday Club has always been a testimony to this, where lives have been changed because of one generation laying their lives down for another, just as Christ laid his life down for us.
We at Edge Church have always been big on connection, as our vision of following Jesus and finding others suggests. As told by Kevin Boyes and his lifegroup, getting involved in Holiday Club is not only a great way to be a part of serving through this huge initiative of bringing Jesus to little ones, but it’s also a great way to connect with others who are doing the same. Thank you to all those who served over this Holiday Club season, whether it was cooking a meal, being a friend to the little ones, or saying a prayer. We loved every moment of it and cannot wait for 2017!
